Shanti, the Sanskrit word for "peace", is the new album following Snatam Kaur's bestseller "Prem". Snatam Kaur's exquisite and gentle voice, along with the subtle instrumentation, evoke an inner and outer sense of peace.

Many of the chants and mantras in this album were composed by Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Spiritual Master who lived from 1469 to 1538 AD. Guru Nanak, together with his disciple Mardana, traveled large parts of India and Asia on foot. Mardana descended from a long line of masters of music. He played a simple stringed instrument of Persian origin, the rebeck. Guru Nanak would often rest under a tree or by a river, for example, and start singing while Mardana accompanied him. People from far away rallied around the two, attracted by the pure sound of the music, and many showed them absolute respect and love. Guru Nanak's songs carry an intriguing rhythm and poetry, and his message speaks directly to the soul.

One of the best known gifts of Guru Nanak to our planet is the Jap Ji. It is recited daily by many thousands of Sikhs around the world. It consists of 40 "pauris" or verses. The awareness reflected in these verses is simple, practical and uplifting for any human being on a spiritual path. Jap Ji means "meditation of the soul". It is intended and suitable for all people, for such was Guru Nanak's way.
So whatever your path, be invited to sing these chants, feel the Sacred Words in your heart, and share in this timeless truth.
Snatam Kaur's angelic voice greets you with a sense of free flow through the chakras, ringing out like an auric echo, filling the listener's ears and heart with an echo of light, limitlessness and purity...
